When I was a younger man and used to read Roy of the Rovers I recall a mention of how Brian Clough would put a felt tip pen on a map of the pitch to trace the location of the ball around the pitch his aim being to have a reflection of not where he thought the ball had been, but where it had been the darker areas showing that. I've liked the ideas that John talks about ever since.

I don't knock the detail of the scouting reports. However, if we can achieve that sort of detail on the opponents can't we produce the same sort of detail on our own performance? We have covered this type of analysis before I know. But I am still wanting to be convinced that we assess the individual performances of our players in an 'objective' way as a means of being able to measure whether their performances are improving or deteriorating. I am not suggesting the subjective opinion of the manager should be over-ruled by objective evidence just that his opinions and player selection could be based on much more solid foundations than what he THINKS he has seen.
